Project management is the application of knowledge, skills, tools and techniques to project activities to meet project requirements. Regardless of your experience as a project manager, projects will consistently challenge your ability.
The project management framework is a set of processes, tools and templates, designed to be used together to manage a project through its life-cycle. Key elements of the framework include the project stakeholders(investor, end user, CEO, etc), Project management knowledge areas, project management tools and techniques, and the contribution of successful projects to the organization. Examples of the project management knowledge areas are: 1. Scope management-Scope statements and work breakdown statements are some of the tools used to achieve definition and proper management of the project 2. Project time management -Time management is the time spent by people on a project. To record time spent, the team implement a Project Time Management Process (or "Time Process"). This time process involves recording the time spent on tasks, using Timesheets. The time process helps the manager know which tasks has been worked on, when and for how long. Gantt charts and critical path analysis are also some of the tools used in time management. 3. The project cost management process will help you to identify each of the costs within your project, ensure that expenses are approved before purchasing, keep a central record of all costs incurred and control the overall cost of your project. An example of the techniques used to accomplish this is the use net present values, cost estimates and cost baselines to calculate returns on investments 4. Having a project quality plan will help determine which quality standards are important to the project. It will also help to ensure that the factors and activities that are required by the stakeholders are included, while unnecessary activities are removed. The Quality Control process of the Project Quality Management knowledge area has several quality control tools and techniques that are used quality control. These include cause and effect diagrams, control charts, Statistical sampling and maturity models among other things. 5. Project Human Resource Management includes the processes required to make the most effective use of the people involved with the project. It includes all the project stakeholders—sponsors, customers and individual contributors . To achieve this, motivation, emphatic listening and resource histograms are some of the tools and techniques that are employed. 6. Communication management plans, kickoff meetings and progress reports are some of the tools used to accomplish effective communications management which aids the team to collect, disseminate and store project information. 7. Risk management integrates recognition of risk, risk assessment, developing strategies to manage it, and mitigation of risk using managerial resources, employing risk management plans, risk registers and risk rankings. 8. Project procurements are simply sub-projects, which need to be managed and involves acquiring goods and services from outside sources. To manage this process successfully make-or-buy analyses, contracts, and supplier evaluation matrices are some of the tools and techniques used here.
Project management is definitely a cumbersome process in case it is not handled carefully. Again, it needs lot of time, patience and other factors at work that make any project a success. Though effective project time management can cumbersome though it would lead results in better way.
