Project managers work along with program managers, sponsors and the project team sharing important information, coordinating important aspects and paying attention to the details and daily operations of each project. They also support project portfolio management, a strategy of grouping and managing projects and programs as a portfolio of investments. They usually also have to be both a leader and a manager, since they understand too well that people can make or break a project.
Because a project manager can have more than a few job descriptions which can vary tremendously he/she must posses many different skills. Among these skills, there are a few which are helpful in almost any situation. These include: Understanding change and how organizations work within their social political and physical environment.\ Management knowledge and skills Human relations/soft skills Making effective use technology as it relates to the project (this is especially important in the IT project world) Leadership skills are paramount in project management. Without it, vision for guiding present projects and suggesting future ones are lost. In the IT world, Project management stands tall at the top of the list of skills most required. As we emerge from the recession, organizations aren't likely to go back to the go-go days of throwing money at IT initiatives or taking risks and deploying without careful thought and planning. Organizations are putting pressure on IT to only implement projects that can show real return-on-investment. In a 2009-2010 PMI Economic pulse survey it was noted that while organizations continue to cut or leave positions open, more than a quarter plan to hire project managers in 2010-2011. As the global economy rebounds and the number of projects continues to rise, project management looks poised for continued growth.
